About Players
Players is a blackletter typeface, originally drawn for the sports and fashion magazine of the same name. It is built like a logotype: set entirely in capitals, with bold black mass, a tight rhythm, and pointed terminals. The letter P was designed first, as a team-style monogram, drawing on the graphic language of caps, stitched patches, and jerseys, before this structural principle was extended to the rest of the alphabet. It is also rooted in the legacy of mid-nineteenth-century American Tuscan wood type, adapting these historic ornamental display forms to a distinctly contemporary use. Some may also read its arcs and points as echoes of the solemn language of Gothic architecture, while others will see in them the sharp edge of punk graphics.
Players is therefore as polyvalent as it is distinctive, and in all cases delivers immediate impact in block form: heavy strokes take the lead, while carefully sized counters preserve clarity despite the density. With over 600 glyphs and broad language support, it performs across multiple formats and disciplines, while remaining unapologetically singular.
