About Thunder
Thunder is a contemporary typeface that reinterprets the legacy of Times New Roman with renewed consistency. Its name draws from the history of The Times of London, nicknamed The Thunderer as early as the 1830s for the uncompromising tone of its editorials. While Stanley Morison’s original, designed in 1932, was conceived for the technical and spatial constraints of The Times’s printing, Thunder rebuilds this foundation through a holistic approach, shaped for today’s editorial and digital environments. It retains the familiarity of its model while adopting subtle shifts in rhythm, proportion, and contrast, giving it a stronger presence on the page and greater adaptability across contexts of use.
The collection is organized into three optical ranges — Standard for text, Display for headlines, and Caption for small sizes — each accompanied by dedicated italics. In addition to these core styles, Thunder offers a wide set of stylistic alternates. The C, G, S, set provides oldstyle forms, while the G, S, set introduces slashed variants; curved-stem P and R and straight-stem B, D, P, and R allow a play between suppleness and austerity; mirrored O and g create striking graphic accents; and an oldstyle W offers a distinctive historical echo.
These variations allow Thunder to adapt with precision, from classic editorial restraint to a sharper contemporary expression depending on subject and context. With over 600 glyphs, broad language coverage, and full support as a variable font, Thunder is not a strict revival but a typographic system. It extends its historical reference while asserting a sharper, modern voice. Released in 2025, Thunder joins BAL Foundry’s inaugural catalogue.
