About TwoTone

TwoTone is a typographic homage to the musical movement of the same name. Born in the late 1970s in Thatcher’s austere England, this danceable blend of Jamaican ska infused with punk and mod energy left a lasting mark on the history of rock music, both sonically and visually. It takes its name from the 2-Tone Records label, founded in Coventry by Jerry Dammers of The Specials, which turned the black-and-white checkerboard into a polysemic symbol: of the sharp elegance associated with its scene, of the offbeat rhythm driving its music, and of the racial and cultural mixing it championed and embodied.

The TwoTone typeface is structured around the checkerboard. Released in seven styles named after the bands, tracks, and expressions that form the genre’s lexicon, it captures both the discipline and the pulsating vibration of this motif, somewhere between repetition and dissonance. By filling in the white squares, TwoTone becomes OneTone. The rhythmic pattern is no longer visible, yet its vibration persists beneath the surface; the structure, rendered invisible, still beats inside the form. Together, TwoTone and OneTone form a typographic diptych driven by the same pulse: on one side explicit, on the other lingering.
